The front sling slot plates are rusty and bent/loose.   And though the pictures aren't the greatest, the bolt is also covered with that same black patina.  The bayonet was missing (I had an old one laying around that I slapped on it for safe keeping).  Honestly, this rifle by condition wouldn't be worth $50.  But you can tell from the patina that it has been there and done that.  You just can't fake patina like that in this price range.  I have no doubts whatsoever that it was a bringback.  A lot of people would say I overpaid for a worn-out wallhanger, but I LOVE the way this thing looks.  It just reeks of history.

Mine is a 1960 and has that same black patina:

This rifle is almost completely shot out.  There is hardly a land left in it.  The bore is very dark (like the outside metal), and but for the mild pitting, it is nearly a smoothbore.  However, the bolt and receiver match and so does the stock:

The stock is also dark and worn smooth.  And when I bought it, I seem to recall that it had a kind of mildewy smell to it.  But I have not sniffed it in a while, so I can't say for certain what it smells like now.

I have it's twin brother:

I don't have any papers, so it is just a story, but it has no import marks.  I found it in a pawn shop.  The shop owner told me that a lady brought it in.  She told him her husband brought it back from Vietnam.  He died and she didn't want/need any guns, so it had to go.  I picked it up for $100 out the door.

Remind me, did we ever figure out which of the Balkan states can be attributed to using those barrel band shims?

Found this on ArmsList for a really good price and not far away at all. The ad was for last month but for some reason he had no takers. When I picked it up, he said he had intended to bubba it but felt guilty doing it.

It is a typical Balkan mixmaster with a few unusual features. It's a post-war 5-line Tula M91 infantry rifle which isn't common. It also has the unusual RAF stock markings which is attributed to Romania. That marking still has an unknown meaning. This rifle was built during the Russian civil war, on the side of the communists. The last line of the 5 lines of text on the barrel shank translates to RFSFR or Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. These markings were changed soon after to CCCP when the name Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was formally adopted. These markings are partially scrubbed as is typical with Balkan imports.

Other normal balkan features are a 'pinecone' stamp, a wedge behind the rear sight spring and barrel band shims.

Didn't yours hang above a smoke filled bar in a VFW hall for about 40 years though Dave? ;)

Plus, I was never saying all do or all should. I only mentioned that some supposedly do. I just find them interesting is all.

$200 isnt bad. They usually run a bit more than that in decent shape.
