Mosin Nagant / Balkan refurbed '42 Izhevsk 91/30
« on: August 27, 2015, 03:37:47 pm »
A friend of mine picked up this 91/30 about 12 years ago and I grabbed some pics while I visited the other day since it's a little different than most so called Balkan import 91/30s that I have seen. This one had a refurb that is somewhat similar to many M91s that you see from that area.

The stock is covered in a somewhat shiny lacquer type finish. I've had it on a similar 91/30, and have seen it quite a few times on M91s. It's hard, thick and doesn't dissolve in mineral spirits or acetone. There are a couple small stock stamps stamped through the finish. The crest is struck through, and the bolt appears to be Romanian. The rear sight leaf is in the white.

I saw a 91/30 on Gunbroker that had a hideous bubba bent bolt and almost passed it over. Looking closer at the photos, I saw that the floorplate and buttplate matched the barrel and that the bent bolt job allowed the stock to be left unmodified. I threw a $100 bid at it since I have a bolt from a Made in USSR marked bubba parts-gun bought a few years ago and actually won. Since most SCWs, and I had a feeling this was one, don't have matching bolts and my bolt was from an SCW, I feel comfortable fixing bubba's handiwork in this case. Not one other part was messed with in it's time here as far as I can tell, except for the addition of what looks like a refurb cleaning rod. The bore is fantastic.

This rifle turned out to be one of the nicest non-refurbs that I have. Other than light rust that's cleaning right up It looks fantastic. No heavy sanding done to this one. Enjoy the photos.

I just helped a friend obtain some. I'll see if he'll post them here.

Thank you for posting! Indian rifles are an area where my collection is sorely lacking.

Steyr Bolt Action Rifles / M95/30 conversion, 1909 Bulgarian contract
« on: July 02, 2015, 04:37:47 pm »
Recently acquired this handy little shoulder thumper. It's a little more uncommon than most of the m95 carbines I see floating around. Converted from a long rifle to carbine length and to 8x56 like many, but this one bears the Bulgarian lion crest. It was part of a 1909 contract where Bulgaria acquired many m95s from Hungary. Stock is a cut-down rifle stock, not a carbine one. Import mark is aggravating but nothing can be done about that.

Arisaka Forum / Type 38 in a one piece stock
« on: June 20, 2015, 05:26:19 pm »
After seeing this rifle and it's twin (rack number 02) on the rack at a local shop last year, I was hoping to be able to get one or both before they sold. I had too many other things on my plate until this week. A nice bonus was that the price had dropped a good bit, I was lucky it was still available.  I wasn't able to get both, but a friend scored the other. These were part of a large collection that was sold to the shop by the heirs of the late collector. There was no info that accompanied the rifles, so it's not known how nearly identical looking rifles with rack #s 02 and 03 ended up in the same collection.

No series mark, and based on various online sources the production date must be at the end or shortly after WW1. I don't see and matching numbers, assembly numbers or otherwise. The bore is really nice, and the dust cover was a nice bonus. It's numbered but non matching as well.

Arisaka Forum / rough outside, sweet inside....type 38 Arisaka
« on: June 13, 2015, 02:10:03 pm »
Glanced the bulletin board at the car wash this week and saw a "Japanese War Rifle" advertised. The call was made, meeting set up and deal was struck. Rifle looks really rough, ground mum, and trainer 00 serial prefix added. Bolt is really crusty but everything works. Cleaning rod too. I'm on a buying ban, but man $75 is way too cheap. After a tear down I found it's in fantastic shape under the wood and the bore is really nice. The bore photo is before I ran anything through it. I had two type 38s, sold one to a friend recently because they were so similar. Now I have this, guess I'm meant to have more than one.

He also through in a Japanese machine gun carrying handle that looks to have been pried from the gun.

Mosin Nagant / 1923 Izhevsk ex-dragoon with 1894 dated receiver
« on: June 05, 2015, 09:54:10 pm »
Picked this rifle up in 2011 after noticing the imperial eagle in the top of the receiver. I found out later that early 20s dated mosins can be hard to find. This one is a typical post-war refurb but has a nice look to it. Thanks for looking.

Mosin Nagant / Re: Two ugly refurbed m38s in unusual stocks

Yeah, I already had one on layaway and grabbed the other while I was there. I have to say the staff there is great, and their layaway plan is fantastic too.

We were there the beginning of March, that's the only time I've been to that shop in person. Clayshooter spends time in the area occasionally and had been there before IIRC. Small world.

I originally passed because I had already spent too much, but talked myself into it. The m38s I posted here were from there, as well as two nagants. Really nice shop. Brandon hooked me up with a sweet Chilean mauser last year too. I wish I'd had more time to go through everything. It's quite a haul for us to get there,  but most definitely we hope to be back. It would be great to go shooting.

Yes it did!   :D.  Was it yours?

Mosin Nagant / Re: Another 37 Izhevsk for Mat's survey. Probable SCW

It doesn't feel tacky or anything, but it definitely has a a different feel to it. It's hard to describe but I guess waxy is one way to do it. It's not the same feel as my one Finn capture 91/30 for instance, even though the stocks look really similar.

I snagged this last weekend, couldn't leave it sit. Serial number fits with it being an Spanish Civil War rifle, but no proof positive traits. Non-Finn, non-refurb, all pre-war features except one, no import marks. The floorplate was replaced with a T53 one at some point based on the huge serial number. The patina on it doesn't quite match the rest of the rifle, I think it was done here.
